Installation guide

Install Codex CLI

Set up OpenAI’s terminal coding agent and start your first session in a local project.

Last reviewed:

Before you begin

  • A terminal, an internet connection, and a project folder.
  • An available Codex sign-in method, such as Sign in with ChatGPT or API-key authentication. Check account access with OpenAI.

Authentication and access are managed directly by each provider.

Install your CLI

OpenAI provides standalone installers for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Homebrew is another option on macOS. These methods do not require an npm installation.

Choose one installation method. Copy the command for your system and run it in your own terminal.

macOS / Linux
curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh
Windows · PowerShell
powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.ps1 | iex"
macOS · Homebrew
brew install --cask codex

Check the installation

Open a new terminal after installing and check the version. You should see a Codex CLI version number.

Terminal
codex --version

Sign in and start

Open a terminal in a project folder you want to work with, then start the CLI:

Terminal
codex

On first launch, choose Sign in with ChatGPT or another available method. Follow the provider’s instructions to complete authentication and return to your terminal.

Try your first task

Begin by asking for an explanation of the project. Review the response before requesting edits.

Explain the structure of this project without modifying files.

If something goes wrong

Command not found

Open a new terminal and confirm that the installer completed. Use the official CLI reference to check your installation method.

Sign-in does not finish

Use the official authentication guide for the login flow offered to your account, including remote or headless environments.

Unexpected account access

Check the account and authentication method selected in Codex. Account entitlements belong to OpenAI.

Keep it up to date

For the standalone method, rerun the official installer for your system. If you installed with Homebrew, use brew upgrade --cask codex. Keep the update method consistent with the original installation.
